Overview
The Eurasian Collared-Dove is a pale, sturdy dove native to Asia and Europe that has rapidly expanded across North America since its introduction in the 1980s. It is now a common resident bird in suburban and agricultural areas across much of the continent.
It is most easily recognized by the thin black half-collar edged in white on the back of its neck, a feature entirely lacking in the native Mourning Dove. Its overall coloring is a pale, sandy gray-buff, giving it a washed-out appearance compared to other doves.
Its feathers are distinctive for the bold white band across an otherwise dark, square-cut tail, best seen from below in flight or when the tail is spread.
Identifying the Feather
Size and Shape
Stockier and larger overall than the Mourning Dove, with a square-cut rather than pointed tail.
Color and Pattern
- Body contour feathers are pale sandy gray-buff, lacking strong markings.
- Nape feathers form a distinctive black half-collar edged in white.
- Tail feathers are dark gray to black at the base with a broad, bold white band across the tip, visible especially from below.
Comparisons
The black half-collar readily separates this species from the Mourning Dove, which lacks any neck marking and has a pointed rather than square tail. Compared to the Rock Pigeon, Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are more uniformly pale and lack iridescence.
Plumage & Molt
Sexes look alike. Juveniles lack the black half-collar until they mature, appearing plainer overall. As an introduced species with an expanding range, plumage is fairly consistent across North American populations.
Habitat & Range
Native to Asia and southeastern Europe, the Eurasian Collared-Dove was introduced to the Bahamas and spread to Florida in the 1980s, rapidly expanding across most of the United States and southern Canada since. It is a year-round resident wherever established, thriving in close association with human development.
Behavior & Field Notes
This species often perches conspicuously on wires, rooftops, and utility poles, giving a distinctive three-syllable cooing call. It forages on the ground for seeds and grain, often near farms and feeders. It builds a simple stick platform nest in trees near buildings. A pale, sandy feather with a bold white-tipped square tail band is a good match for this expanding species.
Frequently asked questions
What feature best distinguishes a Eurasian Collared-Dove feather from a Mourning Dove feather?
The black half-collar on the nape and the square, white-banded tail are unique to the Collared-Dove; Mourning Doves lack a neck collar and have a pointed tail.
Is the Eurasian Collared-Dove native to North America?
No, it was introduced in the 1980s and has since spread rapidly across most of the continent.
What tail pattern should I look for on this species' feathers?
A square-cut tail that is dark gray to black at the base with a broad white band near the tip, especially visible from below.
Do juvenile Eurasian Collared-Doves show the black collar?
No, juveniles lack the collar until they mature, so a collarless feather could belong to a young bird or a different dove species.
