Overview
The White-winged Dove is a common dove of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America, easily recognized by the broad white stripe along the wing that is visible even when the bird is perched. It has expanded its range into urban and suburban areas in recent decades, becoming a familiar backyard bird across much of its range.
Identifying the Feather
Flight feathers: dark brown-gray with a bold white band along the edge of the wing coverts, forming a conspicuous white stripe both at rest and a broader flash in flight. Tail feathers: dark with white corners tipped in black, visible as a pattern when the tail is fanned. Body feathers: brown-gray overall with a subtle pinkish wash on the breast, a bright blue orbital eye-ring, and a red eye. The bold white wing stripe is the most distinctive feather feature, immediately separating this species from the plain-winged Mourning Dove and other regional doves.
Plumage & Molt
Sexes look similar, though males may show a brighter iridescent patch on the neck. Adults are brown-gray with a pinkish wash on the breast, a bold white wing stripe, a small iridescent patch on the side of the neck, a blue orbital ring, and a red eye. Juveniles are duller, with a less defined white wing stripe and a browner eye, gaining full adult features within their first year. There is no marked seasonal plumage change.
Habitat & Range
White-winged Doves are found across desert scrub, thorn forest, agricultural land, and increasingly urban and suburban areas throughout the southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Northern populations are migratory, moving south in winter, while populations in milder climates are largely resident.
Behavior & Field Notes
This dove feeds primarily on seeds and fruit, including cactus fruit in desert habitats, and forages both on the ground and in trees and shrubs. It builds a simple platform nest of twigs, often in dense shrubs, cacti, or trees, sometimes nesting in loose colonies. Its call is a distinctive rhythmic cooing often rendered as 'who cooks for you,' and flocks are frequently seen and heard at dawn and dusk near feeding and roosting sites.
